BAHVN to start new LGBTQ+ group
Starting Saturday June 14th, BAHVN will be offering a new LGBTQ+ hearing voices group that meets weekly, online, on Saturdays from 10am-11:30 am. The group will be co-facilitated by Kenneth Kozi Arrington and Corinita Reyes.
“Many of our hearing voices group participants who identify as LGBTQ+ have expressed interest for a group that speaks directly to their needs,” says Arrington. “Some of our older adults who identify as non-binary or trans, or are questioning their gender identity, struggle to find places where they can be open, feel accepted, and find community. This is doubly difficult when considering the stigma in our culture for those who hear voices.
“This is even more needed with the current dismantling, erasure, and discrimination by the current administration in Washington,” adds Arrington, “of support for families with individuals who identify as non-binary and LGBTQ+.”
Corinita joins in co-facilitating the group because for them, their gender and sexuality is very intertwined from their hearing voices experiences. Having a place with a mutual understanding that both are very real is valuable to participants.
